OLED Technology

OLED technology (organic light emitting diode) displays are the next generation of emissive technology. These displays are composed of self-luminous pixels and require no backlights, incorporating 5-6 thin film layers to emit light.

OLEDs provides clear, bright, full-motion image display that can be viewed from a very wide angle, up to 160 degrees and require very little power, only 2-10 volts..

In addition, OLED displays offer fast response times, high brightness levels in a variety of lighting conditions, low power consumption, and thin design options.

OLED displays have other advantages over LCDs as well: * More Colours* Increased brightness * Faster response time for full motion video * Lighter weight * Greater durability * Broader operating temperature ranges

OLED Technology - Organic Light Emitting Diode is composed of an emissive layer, a conductive layer, a substrate, and anode and cathode terminals. The layers are made of organic molecules that conduct electricity. The layers have conductivity levels ranging from insulators to conductors,so OLEDs are considered organic semiconductors.

OLED Shipments - In spite of global economic crisis, shipments of OLED (organic light emitting diode) displays have set a new record in the second quarter of 2009.

History of OLED - A. Bernanose and co-workers at Université de Nancy, France, first produced electroluminescence in organic materials in the early 1950s by applying high-voltage alternating current (AC) fields in air to acridine orange and quinacridine either deposited on or dissolved in cellulose or cellophane thin films. They proposed a mechanism of either direct excitation of the dye molecules or excitation of electrons.

OLED Market - LEDs and OLEDs are currently used in numerous business and consumer products but have yet to significantly penetrate the general illumination market.

OLED Companies - There are many companies who manufacture or distribute OLED technology. This is the list of most important companies.

Future Technology - Organic light-emitting diodes, which have only recently found their way from the lab to the Consumer Electronics Show floor, are poised to become a multibillion-dollar market.

Flexible OLED Display - OLEDs are very thin, and in fact can be put on flexible materials (plastic or metal foil).
